Students in postsecondary institutions are protected from discrimination under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Under these laws a postsecondary institution must provide appropriate academic adjustments to ensure that it is not discriminating on the basis of disability. It consists of 3 campuses: the Uptown Campus in Albany and Guilderland, the Downtown Campus in Albany and the Health Sciences Campus in the city of Rensselaer. The University has more than 17,500 students spread across 4 colleges and 5 schools.[5] It also has several centers that conduct research activities.[6] The University is a public university.

The university was long a state-funded educational institution, until the State University of New York was formed in 1948. It began as the «Normal School of the State of New York» (or Albany Normal School) on May 7, 1844, as a decision of the state legislature. It opened with 29 students and four faculties in a railroad terminal on State Street in the heart of the city. It was the first institution of higher education chartered by the State of New York.[7]

In 1983, writer William J. Kennedy founded the New York State Writers Institute,[14] which as of 2013 had housed more than 1,200 writers, poets, journalists, historians, playwrights and film producers.[15] During the 1990s, the university built the NanoTech complex, with 42,000 square meters, in addition to the Uptown Campus. In 2006, it became the home of the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering, which in 2014 joined the State University of New York Institute of Technology at Utica.[16] In 2014, it was joined by the State University of New York Utica Institute of Technology.

Finding and getting into the right college can be a daunting task, but it can also lead to very rewarding opportunities for career and personal development. There are many national programs and state laws that allow undocumented students to attend the college of their choice. The following guide is intended to help these students navigate the many exciting options available to them in order to achieve their educational goals.

Beyond these legal realities, it is important to remember that many undocumented students are victims of circumstances beyond their control. Most of them were brought to the United States by their parents at a very young age. They have learned English, completed high school, and have integrated into communities considering themselves to be Americans.

Many students believe that their undocumented status will prevent them from attending college. These undocumented students may live in fear of being exposed and deported if they apply. This should not be a concern for prospective college students, as it is against the law for institutions of higher education to report a student’s immigration status without their permission.
