The School of International Service (SIS) is American University’s school of advanced international studies, covering areas such as international politics, international communication, international development, international economics, peace and conflict resolution, international law and human rights, global environmental policy and US foreign policy.

The School of International Service was established in 1957 and has an alumni network of more than 20,000. SIS enrolls more than 3,000 students from more than 150 countries. The school makes extensive use of the academic and governmental resources offered by its Washington, D.C. location. The School of International Service consistently ranks high among international relations programs. SIS is a member of the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs. SIS also has partnerships with schools such as the Balsillie School of International Affairs.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower urged the founding of schools of international affairs during the height of the Cold War. His initiative brought together thirteen university presidents, including AU’s Hurst Robins Anderson, encouraging them to create human-centered international affairs programs dedicated to preparing professionals for foreign policy beyond the U.S.-Soviet rivalry. In response, SIS was founded with the mission of establishing a school based on service to the global community. In 1958, the school admitted its first full-time class, replacing AU’s International Relations Department. The class consisted of 85 students representing 36 countries.

The purpose of the Exchange Programs is to provide students with a vehicle through which they can develop academically, socially and culturally in a different university environment. In this way, students will live experiences that will allow them to obtain a more comprehensive vision of the world around them.

Best regards.    Thank you for considering our University for your exchange experience.    First of all our office needs to know which is your home University to verify if our Institutions have established Collaboration Agreements.    If so, we need your University to contact us to let us know their intention to nominate you as an exchange candidate.  If there is no established Collaboration Agreement the application procedure would be directly with our Admissions Office.

I never thought it would, but this trip changed my life at a time I needed it most. It sounds cheesy, but the friendly locals, the new experience, the island life… It was exactly what I needed. When I hopped on an airplane to head to Puerto Rico, I was at one of the lowest points of my life. When I left, I was at my highest.
