I want to point out that I started working on human rights in 1981, but this organization was founded in 1968 to continue the legacy of my father, Robert Kennedy, on social justice.
When I started working on human rights in 1981, all of Latin America was under military dictatorships and today there is not one left. Eastern Europe was under communist rule and today there isn’t one either, South Africa was at the height of apartheid…. Women’s rights were not on the international agenda and today they are. The LGTBI community did not have the acceptance that it has today. I think there have been profound changes in our society. Another thing that has changed is that when I started working there were not many NGOs, but today every country has them, including China. NGOs have become one of the main drivers of change in our society.
I have 7 brothers and 3 sisters, and I am the seventh of 11 siblings, which makes you appreciate the value of human rights. On the other hand, my father was the Attorney General of the United States at the height of the civil rights movement. When I learned to tie my shoelaces, I always made sure to tie the left one first because I wanted to always be fair. I think human rights has always been an important part of me. During my time in college I started an internship at Amnesty International and began documenting the abuses of American immigration officials against refugees from El Salvador. I thought that what our country was doing to the most disadvantaged was inconsistent with our values and I wanted to do something about it.
