Blair achieves a notable milestone in the history of commercial aviation by making the first non-stop transatlantic flight on the United States – British Isles route in a Sikorsky VS-44 seaplane, suspending his civilian employment in 1943. He rejoined the USAF with the rank of captain in naval transport and additionally served as a test pilot in the Grumman Aircraft Corporation testing seaplanes such as the Martin Mars, and the prototypes of the F6F Hellcat and F7F Tigercat fighter jets. He also made transoceanic flights with the same Sikorsky VS-44 aircraft on a combat mission to the British Isles.

On May 29, 1951, Blair performed another aeronautical feat, flying the same Mustang, making a polar crossing from Bardutoss, Norway and landing in Fairbanks, Alaska with a distance of 5245 km in 10.27 hours.

President Harry S. Truman honors him as an outstanding aviator of the world with the Harmon International Trophy Thurlow Award[2] at a ceremony in Casablanca and he is also awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.
