What are the dimensions of educational evaluation?

One of these authors is Luis Ángel Blanco, who discusses evaluation at length in his book La evaluación educativa, más proceso que producto (Educational evaluation, more process than product). Taking into account that his work is very complete, we have based the present monograph on his aforementioned book but taking the core elements for the management of evaluation as a tool. We have also reinforced part of the information with other internet sources.

Evaluation has approximately a century of history and its origins go back to the concern for the measurement of human behavior. Three major periods in evaluation are recognized: testing, processes and judgments.

During the testing period, the main objective was the establishment of individual differences. Evaluation focuses on the development of instruments that allow obtaining differential inter-subject scores and their position within the normative group. Thorndike is considered the father of measurement in education.

In the third period, judgments, the concept of evaluation acquires a multidimensional conceptualization. It corresponds to a professional judgment based on the opinion of experts in evaluation, oriented to decision making.

The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) is a student-centered system based on the student workload required for the achievement of a program’s objectives.

Credits are assigned to all educational components of a study program (such as modules, courses, internships, thesis work). Credits reflect the amount of work each component requires.    The student’s results are documented by the attribution of a grade. On the ECTS grading scale:

Students are awarded ECTS credits only when they have passed the examination and achieved the required learning outcomes for a component of a program or for the corresponding degree.

The course schedule shows the offerings for each academic period. It is published in the Course Finder prior to the enrollment period, within the deadlines established in the Academic and Student Activities Calendar.

The schedule reflects modifications after the first official day of publication, which may include new sections; closure of sections; modification of professors, vacancies and schedules.

Course registration is done every semester, via Internet, through the Student Academic Management System. There is also a Summer Academic Season -TAV- which takes place in January. It consists of an extraordinary period during which some Faculties dictate courses that allow regular students of this University to advance or recover subjects of their own curricular sequence.

Dimension of educational evaluation

In some cases, the same article appears in more than one section because it includes among its objectives the study of more than one of these phenomena. These may have a clinical significance or be the consequence of bad habits, whether transient or long-lasting.

Onyper et al [26] investigated the advantages and disadvantages of starting classes later. Students slept more hours and had less sleepiness, but later start was associated with lower grades and higher alcohol use, which seemed to be the main factor in poorer academic performance.

Some studies demonstrated an association between chronotype and academic performance, and morning preference was associated with better academic outcomes [16,20,20,32-34]. Other studies found no significant association between chronotype and academic performance [15,22,22,27]. Onyper et al [26] showed that morning people performed better during the day, but this benefit was not extensive to academic performance.
