The confinements and social restrictions resulting from the pandemic caused an unprecedented drop in global GDP of 3.5% in 2020, with more pronounced declines in the advanced economies as a whole than in the emerging economies. With the discovery and start of the distribution of various vaccines, global economic activity is expected to rebound strongly – above 5% – in 2021, although the recovery will be highly asymmetrical and fraught with uncertainty. While in China it is expected to be very strong, in most developed countries it will be more moderate, and in several of the most important emerging powers it will be weak.
Nevertheless, and in spite of events favorable to stability such as the proliferation of Keynesian policies, the change of presidency in the US and the agreement for a Brexit , in such a volatile context as the current one, potential risks and uncertainties of different natures that could threaten the recovery forecasts are still looming on the horizon.
