Denes has 10 works in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.[8] The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York acquired 5 of his pieces for its permanent collection.[9] And at the Whitney Museum of American Art there are 3 works by Denes in the permanent collection.[10] In addition, he is present in 43 museums around the world.[11] One of his best-known works is Wheatfield — A Confrontation, 1982.

One of his best known works is Wheatfield — A Confrontation, from 1982. His work consisted of converting 8000 m² of a Manhattan lot into arable land and planting wheat on it. With irrigation and fertilization, the wheat field matured and caused a sensation in New York City. The existence of the wheat alone, but also its yellow color, created a sharp contrast to the harshness of the dark skyscrapers in front of which it had grown. With it he wanted to denounce the distance between urbanism and agricultural production, but also all the political and economic interests that conditioned the grain market. In his words, “I was drawing attention to management errors and hunger in the world. It was an intrusion into the sanctum sanctorum, a challenge to the Great Civilization. At the same time it was Shangri-la, a paradise in miniature, one’s own childhood, a hot summer afternoon in the countryside, it was peace.”[5]
