This report examines events and research published over two weeks, between June 23 and July 4, 2019, discussing the massive use of trees to enable the unsustainable lifestyles of the world’s richest 1% segment in the event of impending ecological disasters: From genetically modified trees to facilitate “green” generation of energy, plastics and chemicals; to planting trillions of trees to reduce global carbon levels in the atmosphere or “reforms” of the economic system to enable future profits under the guise of protecting biodiversity.

The three events at which these proposals were presented were the 2019 International Forestry Research Organization Tree Biotechnology Conference, held June 23-29 at NCSU in Raleigh, North Carolina; The Global Tree Restoration Potential study, published July 4 in the journal Science; and the launch of Business for Nature initiatives in China and Norway on July 2.

Veronika Magdanz, from the Smart Nano Devices Group led by Samuel Sanchez, as well as Iris Batalha and Mohit Kumar from the “Molecular Bionics” group led by Giuseppe Battaglia, have been selected among more than 700 candidates for a grant within the competitive call for postdoctoral fellowships for young scientific leaders of the “La Caixa” Foundation. Thanks to these fellowships, the researchers will work on innovative micro and nano systems that seek to contribute to a better understanding of, and solutions to, health problems.

Born in Rathenow (Germany) in 1985, she studied biotechnology at the TU Braunschweig between 2004 and 2010 and chemical engineering at the University of Waterloo (Canada) between 2007 and 2008 as an ISAP exchange student. He received his PhD in biology in 2016 at TU Dresden after pioneering work on biohybrid microrobots at the Institute for Integrative Nanosciences at the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden (IFW). From 2017 to 2020, he conducted metabolic and kinetic studies on spermatozoa of various species as open-subject postdoctoral research at the Chair of Applied Zoology at TU Dresden, in addition to continuing his research on sperm-hybrid microrobots. In 2020, he received a Feodor-Lynen fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to join IBEC’s Smart Nano Biodevices group.

The ideal entry profile of the Biotechnology student, understood as the set of knowledge, capacities and defined skills that he/she should have for the adequate follow-up and development of the training program, is specified by differentiating the specific knowledge, on the one hand, and the desirable capacities and skills, on the other.

Students wishing to pursue a degree in Biotechnology are recommended to have specific knowledge in subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Statistics, Technology, English and Computer Science.

For the best performance in the Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, the Bachelor’s Degree in Natural and Health Sciences or equivalent, in which the student will study Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Geology, is considered advisable.

Students who have begun their studies in the Bachelor’s Degree in Biotechnology and have not yet finished, may join the Degree if they so request. For this purpose, the following table of equivalencies between the subjects of the Bachelor’s Degree and the Bachelor’s Degree has been established:
