Under the leadership of its president, Walter WS Cook, the organization was renamed the Institute of Fine Arts in 1937. The Institute was greatly strengthened by refugee professors from the German and Austrian institutions that had given birth to the modern discipline of art history. Such seminal art historians as Erwin Panofsky, Walter Friedlaender, Karl Lehmann, Julius Held, and Richard Krautheimer endowed the Institute in its course of rigorous, creative, and pluralistic scholarship, with strong worldwide connections.
The Institute conducts excavations at Aphrodisias, Turkey; the sanctuary of the gods at Samothrace; at Abydos, Egypt; and Selinunte, Italy. It publishes the IFA Journal of Archaeology, which documents the progress of excavations, as well as the involvement of IFA faculty and students in international archaeological research.
In collaboration with Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania, the IFA conducts a long-term archaeological study of the history of the important site of Abydos in southern Egypt. Abydos is known as the burial place of Egypt’s early kings, and later became the principal place of worship of the god Osiris, ruler of the Land of the Dead.
