Currently, there are 7 universities that offer this degree, which corresponds to the Bachelor’s Degree in Astronomy: U. de Chile, PUC, PUC, Concepción, Valparaíso, La Serena, Católica del Norte and Andrés Bello. In general, the career lasts 9 semesters; in some a little less, in others a little more (more or less one semester).
The difficulty in general depends on so many factors that I will limit myself to how I found my career. In general I did not find it difficult if you are consistent and really know what you are getting into (which is a lot of math, physics and programming). It is demanding in time because of the profile of a university student: roughly speaking, what you want is to understand everything as well as possible, and that takes time.
It is important to emphasize that everything I mentioned is learned. As an example, I hated programming at the beginning. Now I can’t work without it and it has simplified my life even outside of my life as an astronomer.
To be honest, astronomy is not a career you should enter “to try out” or “if you’re not sure”. Leave that to engineering. Astronomy and physics are careers that require a passion for knowledge. Think that as an astronomer you can make a good living, but you are not going to become a millionaire!

EPO professionals participating in this summit are invited to visit ALMA, the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO) and the Gemini-Sur telescope.
