In collaboration with Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania, the IFA conducts a long-term archaeological study of the history of the important site of Abydos in southern Egypt. Abydos is known as the burial place of Egypt’s early kings, and later became the principal place of worship of the god Osiris, ruler of the Land of the Dead. The goal of the excavations is to build a comprehensive understanding of the ancient activities at the site, how their operations and significance evolved over time, and their relationship to the broader context of Egyptian history and culture. The excavations are also intended to provide a comprehensive understanding of the site’s history.
