Robert Zimmer, presidente de la Universidad de Chicago, dijo que su institución estaba «impulsada por un enfoque singular en el valor de la investigación abierta, rigurosa e intensa. Todo lo que reconocemos como distintivo de la universidad fluye de esto».

Dijo que Chicago creía que «la argumentación, más que la deferencia, es el camino hacia la claridad», que «los argumentos se sostienen o caen por sus méritos» y que la universidad reconocía que «nuestras contribuciones a la sociedad descansan en el poder de nuestras ideas y en la apertura de nuestro entorno para desarrollar y probar ideas».

Su respuesta suscitó muchos elogios. Un lector de Times Higher Education dijo que la «gloriosa afirmación» de Zimmer era «maravillosamente refrescante» y había «traído alegría a mi corazón, lágrimas a mis ojos y un renovado sentido de compromiso con la vida de la mente».

Pero por muy gloriosa que fuera la declaración de Zimmer, también sirvió para poner de manifiesto el problema al que se enfrenta el creciente número de personas y organizaciones que se dedican a clasificar las instituciones de enseñanza superior: ¿cómo diablos se miden cosas tan intangibles?
