The name Robert Reid Cabral is familiar to many, and no wonder, this is the name of the main children’s hospital in the capital, inaugurated in 1954 to provide assistance to the infant population, and which in its beginnings was called La Angelita, in honor of the daughter of the dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo.

Born on May 5, 1929 in the city of Santiago, he graduated in Medicine from the University of Santo Domingo. After enrolling in Medicine, he moved to study the specialty of pediatrics at the University of Washington and later to the Baltimore City Hospital in Maryland, standing out as one of the best in his field, so that upon completion of his studies there he was invited by the university to stay as head of the Department of Pediatrics, to which invitation Dr. Reid responded: “It is the greatest honor I could have received, but here there are many people who can choose, instead, my country is needing me”.

At the Baltimore City Hospital in Maryland he met the woman who later became his wife, the also prominent pediatrician Ligia Fernandez, of Cuban nationality, with whom he married in 1949 and had two sons, Armando, born in 1960 and Robbie, in 1961, after her death.
