Welcome to MIT! We hope this page helps everyone who wants to learn more about our dynamic, diverse, and compassionate community. Here you will find information on the history of the Institute, our academic program, and our generous financial assistance program.
MIT is known for its innovative community of students, researchers, and creators who use their skills to improve the world. We believe it is crucial to educate people from all walks of life to provide solutions that benefit all communities. That is evident through our extraordinary diversity.
There is no majority ethnic background; 56% of our students are from historically underrepresented minorities. Foreign nationals represent 10% of MIT’s students. We have students from all 50 states and 131 foreign countries.
In our humble opinion, this is the best place to study. We are a research-focused university that places great importance on undergraduate education. Among other scholars, we have a number of distinguished professors: 23 MacArthur Genius Grant winners, 11 Nobel laureates, and 1 Pulitzer Prize winner are currently on our faculty. And all of them teach undergraduate students.

Many Hispanic and Latino students are the first in their family to attend college. College tuition is more expensive than ever, and these students often face mounting debt with limited employment options and earning potential compared to their non-Hispanic counterparts. The following guide explores essential scholarships that can help Hispanic and Latino students find success.
Less generational wealth than white students – The high cost of college is daunting for many, including many Hispanic and Latino students and their families. Low-income families are 64% less likely to accumulate savings than higher-income families. In addition, 47% of Hispanic Americans were denied or approved for less credit than requested in 2016-17, more than twice as many as whites.
First-generation college students – As the first members of their families to seek to attend colleges, many Hispanic and Latino students are unfamiliar with the complexities of the processes required to apply to colleges and to obtain financial aid.

Family obligations present another challenge for Hispanic students. A 2014 survey by National Journal found that two-thirds of Hispanic women and men who sought full-time work or joined the military after completing high school expressed doing so to help their loved ones financially. In comparison, only 39% of white women and men who did not attend college said the same.
However, many schools classify undocumented students as “aliens,” which removes their ability to be eligible for federal financial aid and reduced in-state tuition rates.

Students in the U.S. must be classified as permanent residents before they can receive financial aid. Most immigrants obtain permanent residency by applying for a Green Card, but current laws stipulate that undocumented citizens cannot do that; instead, they must leave the U.S. and apply for permanent residency from the consulate of their home country.
