Variolization still presented a risk of death for 2% of those undergoing the procedure. This was fertile ground for criticism. Angry rumors swirled around inoculation when The New England Courant published Douglass and Dalhonde’s sensationalist articles against inoculation.[3] One article by Douglass darkly joked about the use of inoculations against surrounding Native American communities.[1] Dr. Boylston became famous and the colonial government remained deeply skeptical of his and Mather’s experiment. The Boston City Council summoned him in early August to explain his procedures, and the Council condemned the inoculation and ordered him to desist immediately. Despite opposition, Boylston gained the support of local learned men such as Cotton’s father, Increase Mather, and four other “inoculation ministers” by the names of Benjamin Coleman, Thomas Prince, John Webb, and William Cooper. The inoculations were resumed two days later.[6] Dr. Boylston was assailed in the streets for this[1] and finally threatened to the point that he hid secretly in his home for two weeks.

Family obligations present another challenge for Hispanic students. A 2014 survey by National Journal found that two-thirds of Hispanic women and men who sought full-time work or joined the military after completing high school expressed doing so to help their loved ones financially. In comparison, only 39% of white women and men who did not attend college said the same.

However, many schools classify undocumented students as “aliens,” which removes their ability to be eligible for federal financial aid and reduced in-state tuition rates.

Students in the U.S. must be classified as permanent residents before they can receive financial aid. Most immigrants obtain permanent residency by applying for a Green Card, but current laws stipulate that undocumented citizens cannot do that; instead, they must leave the U.S. and apply for permanent residency from the consulate of their home country.
