Jackson State University had an early antecedent in Natchez Seminary, founded on October 23, 1877 in Natchez, Mississippi. The seminary operated under the auspices of the Baptist Church (American Baptist Home Mission Society of New York).[4][5] In 1883, the school changed its name to Jackson College and moved from Natchez to a campus in Jackson, now the campus of Millsaps College.[6] The Baptist Church withdrew its financial support in 1934, and the school became a state institution in 1940, under the name Mississippi Negro Training School. The name was changed again to Jackson College for Negro Teachers in 1944. Two decades later, in 1967 it was called Jackson State College; and finally in 1974 it adopted the current name Jackson State University (JSU).[7] The name was changed to Jackson State College for Negro Teachers in 1944.

On May 14, 1970, two students were shot and killed by police during a campus protest.[8] Twelve other students were injured during the shooting.[9] One dormitory still bears the marks of bullets fired at the school that day.
