Jacobs University Bremen (in English, Jacobs University Bremen; formerly International University Bremen) is a highly selective, highly ranked, private and independent research university in Bremen, Germany.

Jacobs University was founded in 1999 as the “International University Bremen” (IUB), but changed its name in early 2007 in honor of philanthropist Klaus Johann Jacobs, who donated a substantial sum that enabled the former IUB to avoid bankruptcy.

The president of Jacobs University is Professor Dr. Heinz-Otto Peitgen. Previously, the president was Prof. Dr. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Joachim Treusch, who followed in the footsteps of the University’s founding president Dr. Fritz Schaumann on July 1, 2006. Since January 2008, Prof. Dr. Karin Lochte, director of the Alfred Wegener Polar and Marine Institute, has been head of the board of governors.

There are currently 1,370 students from 108 countries, studying for undergraduate and graduate degrees (Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD). The student body and faculty are proportionally more international than at other German universities.

The GSC is a space for intellectual integration, where the natural and social sciences are developed and the interests of the Galapagos community and institutions are advanced. The GSC’s strategy is based on three axes of development: (1) scientific research, (2) education, and (3) community support and outreach.

They also carry out a wide training and dissemination activity, highlighting the Master’s Degree in Science and Technology from Space and the PhD program in Space Research and Astrobiology that is taught jointly with the Center for Astrobiology (CAB) of INTA-CSIC.

The group includes PhDs in physics and engineering, PhD students, engineers (in electronics, computer science, industrial and telecommunications) and programmers. All of them belong to the Departments of Automatics and Physics and Mathematics. These factors provide the group with a great potential to cover both scientific and technological aspects in the development of space missions.

During this period of time we carried out research projects in collaboration with national and foreign institutions. Among them the IFIC of the University of Valencia, the Physics Department of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the Institute for Advanced Studies in Dublin, the HH Wills Physics Laboratory of the University of Bristol and the Space Sciences Department of the European Space Agency (ESA).
