During World War II, the «Young Building» New Building was converted into a military hospital. In 1946, the building was returned to its original function as a shared educational institution between the Normal School and Victoria College, which merged in 1955.
In 1967, Victoria Normal School and Victoria College moved to the University of Victoria’s Gordon Head Campus and the Institute of Adult Studies was established by the Greater Victoria School Board. The Adult Studies Institute is housed in what is now the Ewing Building, and was the first center in Canada to offer day courses for adults seeking high school graduation.
Since the Institute’s inception, local interest in a community college grew. On October 9, 1970, Victoria residents voted in favor of the creation of the College, and plans for the creation of «Juan de Fuca College» followed. The provincial government formally approved the college on October 27, 1970.

Victoria’s prime location, right between the Canadian mainland and the Pacific Ocean, makes the area perhaps one of Canada’s earliest modern developments. From its humble beginnings as a back-up trading post for Fort Vancouver (in Vancouver in the U.S. state of Washington) erected by James Douglas in 1843, the city’s ports have witnessed historic events that brought influxes of people from all over the world to Canada: from the gold rush to the opium trade between Asia and North America. However, the post-World War I real estate boom is what gives the city its well-known character, with Edwardian skylines appearing in the downtown that transition to genteel civility in the suburbs. A trip to Victoria would not be complete without admiring its classical buildings and a trip to the park or houses outside the city.
Victoria is accessible from the rest of Vancouver Island by highways, and from the mainland by taking one of the car ferries described in By Boat. Victoria is connected to Nanaimo and other points north by Trans-Canada Highway 1. BC-14 connects Victoria to Sooke and Port Renfrew. BC-17 connects Sidney (and Vancouver via BC ferries) to Victoria. You can also bring your car on Black Ball ferries to Port Angeles, WA and Washington State ferries from Sidney to the San Juan Islands and Anacortes, WA.
