Family obligations present another challenge for Hispanic students. A 2014 National Journal survey found that two-thirds of Hispanic women and men who sought full-time work or joined the military after completing high school said they did so to help their loved ones financially. In comparison, only 39% of white women and men who did not attend college said the same.
However, many schools classify undocumented students as “aliens,” which removes their ability to be eligible for federal financial aid and reduced in-state tuition rates.

Students in the U.S. must be classified as permanent residents before they can receive financial aid. Most immigrants obtain permanent residency by applying for a Green Card, but current laws stipulate that undocumented citizens cannot do that; instead, they must leave the U.S. and apply for permanent residency from the consulate of their home country.

Course acceleration or academic acceleration consists of, within an educational program, placing one or several students in a higher course than the one that would correspond to them by age. This is done because, given the characteristics of the students, it is considered that it will benefit them. Students need not be gifted, but acceleration has been described as a “fundamental need” for gifted students because it provides them with material appropriate to their level. Although course acceleration is practiced worldwide, most of the educational research on it has been conducted within the United States. However, acceleration programs are not always the same for all students.
However, acceleration programs often face difficulties because many teachers, academic administrators, and parents do not believe in its benefits. This is because teacher training programs often do not include acceleration, despite decades of research showing that it is a successful educational option for gifted students. Adults who have experienced acceleration themselves, however, tend to be very well disposed toward it.
