Degree of statistical reliability

The reliability, reproducibility or consistency of measurements is a fundamental principle of the accuracy of a study. In any research process, given the large number of sources of potential errors, it is necessary that researchers try to reduce those related to the measurement of variables to provide greater confidence in the results and conclusions of their study1,2.

In other words, an instrument is reliable, accurate or reproducible when the measurements made with it generate the same results at different times, scenarios and populations if applied under the same conditions; however, it must be assumed that in daily clinical practice, reliability is combined with another concept which is validity, giving rise to various scenarios, from valid and reliable measurements to those that lack validity and reliability, as in the case of observations or observers who agree only due to the effect of chance (Figure 1). Therefore, the greater the precision of a measurement, the greater the statistical power in the sample under study3.

1Daily we find news about the formidable developments of artificial intelligence, its current and potential applications, and the profound labor, economic and social impact that its progressive implementation in various professional sectors is causing and may cause in the immediate future. 22 In this context, the introduction of predictive coding tools has made it possible to alleviate these tensions in the procedural system. These tools use active learning algorithms that “learn” the criteria of legal relevance in relation to a particular case by analyzing a subset of statistically significant documents that are previously “coded” manually (i.e., each of them classified as “relevant” or “not relevant”) by a lawyer knowledgeable about the case30 . Based on these examples, the system generates a predictive model that subsequently applies all the documents in the set to be reviewed, classifying them as relevant or not relevant and prioritizing them by assigning each of them a specific degree of probability of relevance, which makes it possible to directly discard those that do not reach a certain minimum degree of probability.
