Translated José Victorino Lastarria’s Literary Memoirs (Oxford’s Library of Latin America, 2000); Manuel Garretón’s Incomplete Democracy (with Gregory Horvath; University of North Carolina Press; After-Dinner Conversation, translation of José Asunción Silva’s De sobremesa (University of Texas Press’ Pan-American Literature in Translation series, 2005). He compiled An Anthology of Spanish American Modernismo, in English Translation with Spanish Text (translated with Sergio Waisman, MLA Texts and Translations series, 2007); Manual of Spanish-English Translation, a task-based textbook (Prentice-Hall, 2009). His translation of a selection of poems by Reinaldo Arenas, Autoepitaph: Selected Poems (Camelly Cruz Martes, ed.; University Press of Florida), placed him on the lists for the 2015 PEN Award for Poetry in Translation. You are an Honorary Professor at Yangtze University, Hubei Province, China.
How do you see the possibility of literary translation, in the face of the ideology of untranslatability? The issue is perhaps linked to the problem you indicate in your epilogue, that we are dealing with an essentialist model of translation as equivalence. What do you think?

In particular, the program emphasizes the phenomena shared by border territories within the continent, paying special attention to artistic, literary and intellectual activity, as well as to the forms of organization of civil society and institutions. In addition, the processes of circulation of people, ideas and materials are investigated, accounting, at the same time, for phenomena of appropriation, adaptation and destruction, as well as differentiation and otherness.
Therefore, as a core research line of the PhD program in American Studies, border and circulation studies provide multiform and flexible analytical tools with different edges and different developments, which allow delving into the complexities of cultural creations.
As a general result of the doctoral program, graduates of the PhD in American Studies will be able to identify and articulate with greater complexity the different knowledge that allows them to approach and fully understand certain social or cultural phenomena of the Americas, proposing comparative and interdisciplinary research processes whose objective is to trace new methodological paths and build more complex views regarding the realities of the continent.
